The 23-meter stone tower, originally known as the Kaiser Wilhelm Towere when it was constructed in 1901, was eventually torn down by Army engineers in the early 1960s. A smaller (11 meters) wooden observation tower was built to replace it. At 816 meters, the Erbeskopf is the highest mountain in the German state (Land) of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz).
