HISTORY of Flint Kaserne

The kaserne at Bad Tölz was designated as the Headquarters for Third US Army in May 1945. On 23 May 1945, Third US Army Headquarters (Fwd) moved from Regensburg, where it had been located on VE-Day, to the kaserne. The new headquarters area consisted of approximately 40 acres that formerly had been occupied by a German "Junkerschule."

This installation was considered to be one of the finest military posts in Bavaria.The main building consisted of some 900 rooms built in the shape of a quadrangle building, and it afforded such facilities as offices, barracks, messes, chapel, theater and post exchange. Other facilities within the headquarters area included laundry, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, athletic field, stable, riding hall, and motor pool.

Third Army headquarters was located at Bad Tölz until April 1946, when it moved to Heidelberg.

During Third Army's stay in Bad Tölz it was assigned the general mission of occupying the German Land (state) of Bavaria.

Flint Kaserne, Bad Toelz was the site of Headquarters, 1st (Inf) Division, from September 1946 until January 1951.

The kaserne was occupied by Headquarters, Special Troops, and 3rd Bn, 169th Inf Regt, of the 43rd Division, from October 1951 until the summer of 1952 when the regiment moved to Nuernberg.

The 631st Tank Destroyer Battalion moved into the Prinz Heinrich Kaserne within days after the end of WWII in May 1945. On no website about the kaserne do I find any mention of our being there.

I have some photos of the US Army at Murnau. I grew up in Murnau, Upper Bavaria, about 70 Kilometers south of Munich.

For a long time there was a Kaserne used by the US Army, Kimbro Kaserne. It was the home of the US Army Engineer School for Europe!

As a young boy, if we heard a helicopter we would run to the Kimbro Kaserne, which was ony about 600 meter from my home. We wanted to see the landing of the helicopter and, of course, we waited until they took off again.

I was a teenager, and sometimes I took some photos. It was much more interesting to take a photo of a helicopter or if skydivers and not so much of buildings of the Kaserne. Today I would photograph everything.

Yeah, I was most of the time at the Service Club, up on the last floor in the HQ Building. I remember my first long-playing record (Johhny Cash at San Quentin) was from the PX. I still have today. One time a friend gave me a "cigarette" and said inhale, so this my first and also my last joint.

And of course every year the Open House was a big event! I remember very well the very, very good ice cream in a cube.

I have also some photos from Schwaiganger (a stud farm about 5 Kilometers south-east from Murnau - there was a drop zone used by the Special Forces at Bad Tölz. Sometimes, on a weekend, they were skydiving just for fun in Schwaiganger. On your excellent website I saw also a few words about Schwaiganger. I think the SF did some HALO Excercises there.

Yeah, I´m old school, I miss the time because it was a very, very good time.

Drop Zone at Schwaiganger

I have also attached a few photos from the drop zone Schwaiganger. This drop zone was used by the Special Forces Group in Bad Tölz.

I took these photos - as far as I remember - in the summer of 1966.

Interesting is that they were already using the new Bell UH 1 Helicopter instead the old Sikorsky H-34, that they used before.
