The EUCOM Engineer Division operates six rebuild plants in Germany with the mission of rehabilitating and returning to stock US Army engineer equipment in Europe. Since 1947, when the program was initiated, over 4,000 lines of equipment with a total value of $37 million have been rebuilt under this program. The plants are run under the supervision of the Maintenance Division, Hanau Engineer Depot.
The rebuild program averages about 200 major items and 150 minor items of equipment a month (averaging a value of over $1.3 million).
The plants are:
Daimler Benz Plant in Stuttgart: opened in the fall of 1947 (by the spring of 1949, the other five plants had been added to the program).
This plant mainly rebuilds truck-mounted and crawler cranes.
MAN Plant in Nuernberg (): rebuilds tractors.
Fulda Plant: rebuilds generators.
Backnang Plant: rebuilds road construction machinery.
Frieseka and Hopfner Plant in Erlangen-Bruck: repairs engineer trailers, machine-shop equipment and other items.
Henschel Locomotive Works in Kassel: rebuilds miscellaneous types of engineer equipment from small pumps to large crawler-mounted cranes. |
