(Source: Heidelberg Herald-Post, April 28 1994) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pirmasens inactivation marked The 294th Base Support Bn and Hq and Hq Co., 294th BSB cased their colors April 22 in an inactivation ceremony held in the post gymnasium on Husterhöh Kaserne in Pirmasens. Their official inactivation orders are dated for June 15. Soldiers from these units are reassigned within USAREUR or are transferring back to the United States. In its place, an area support team of the 415th BSB, based in Kaiserslautern, will continue to support the Pirmasens military community. In the ceremony, before the colors were cased, Bundeswehr Brig. Gen. Wilhelm Romatzeck presented the streamer "Fahnenband," of the Federal Republic of Germany to the 294th BSB for the preservation of peace and freedom of the Federal Republic of Germany. Romatzeck is the deputy commander of the WBK IV in Mainz/5th Panzer Division. Afterwards Romatzeck handed the accompanying certificate, signed by Volker Rühe, the federal minister of defense, to Lt. Col. Joseph E. Huber, commander of the 294th BSB. The certificate reads: "In the spirit of our common mission and in appreciation of services rendered in Germany for the safeguarding of peace and freedom, the 294th Base Support Battalion is awarded the streamer of the Federal Republic of Germany." Also participating in the ceremony was Col. John T. Revelle, commander of the 26th Area Support Group. History of 294th BSB The U.S. Army Military Community Pirmasens, a forerunner of the 294th BSB, activated in 1974. In August 1976, USMCA-P became a subordinate unit of the newly established 21st Support Comd., with the mission of providing base operations support to the Pirmasens military community. The Pirmasens community included Husterhöh Kaserne, an installation originally built to house Wehrmacht soldiers manning the Siegfried Line along the French border. The community also included Fischbach Ordnance Depot, Dahn Ordnance Depot, Münchweiler Hospital Kaserne, Massweiler Depot, Depot Clausen and over 28 storage sites in the Pirmasens area. As part of the October 1991 implementation of the USAREUR Community Command Plan, the 294th BSB activated, assuming the base operations support mission of USMCA-P, under the command and control of the 29th Area Support Group. In October 1992 the 294th BSB assumed the base operations support mission for Reserve Storage Area, Miesau from the inactivating base support battalion in Zweibrücken. The 294th has supported deployments for Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Reforger exercises and Centag and Landcent exercises. It has been responsible for the orderly drawdown of over 4,000 soldiers from Pirmasens. In June 1992 USAREUR announced the 294th BSB for inactivation June 15, 1994 as part of its community realignment plan. In its place an area support team of the 415th BSB in Kaiserslautern will continue to support the Pirmasens community. |
